Actions devoted to the celebration of Vasyl Stus’ 70th anniversary from the Birthday

There planned a number of informational and social actions devoted to the celebration of the prominent Ukrainian poet and dissident Vasyl Stus’ 70th anniversary from the Birthday in the Donetsk region. Thus, on the 8th of January there was a solemn laying of flowers to the poet’s memorial with participation of student youth, the public and workers of the Donetsk national university, in which the artist studied in due time, and after that was the theatric performance in the philological department in Donetsk.

 

The destiny of Vasyl Stus is closely connected with the Donetsk region. From the age of three years the future writer has been living in Stalino town. Here he receives the primary education in the secondary school №75, continues studying in Stalino pedagogical institute “Ukrainian language and literature” speciality. Later he teaches his subject secondary school № 23 in Horlivka town of the Donetsk region. In 1963 he directly acquaints with miner’s conditions, working during a short term on the”Oktjabrs’ka mine” in Donetsk and obtains a new experience of the literary editor in the Donetsk soviet newspaper “Sotsialisticheskij Donbas”.

 

Practical interdiction to be in the press, permanent pursuing and persecutions, two judicial processes, serving his sentence in concentration camps of Mordovia and Permian regions, exile to Magadan region captured his forces, health and life beforehand. But it did not hinder him to leave after himself a bright poetic heritage, in which Stus attained the tops of the world poetry, and a unique epistolary possession. From the reburying in 1989 and the Independence of Ukraine the poet’s figure and creation attract a great attention of the researches and society.

The latest years are known as the years of active investigations of the poet’s creation and grandeur of his spiritual rise, and also his role in the history of Ukraine and, in particular, the Donetsk region.

Visible images of the Donetsk lands are eternalized in the artist’s poetic heritage. Reasons for writing opened letters, addresses and sharp comments in epistolary creative work are the concrete conditions of the soviet reality in the Donetsk region.
