АLMA MATER is 70!
The RSA chairman, VOLODYMYR LOGVYNENKO, and the oblast council chairman, ANATOLIY BLYZNYUK, took part in the celebrations concerning the 70th anniversary from the creation day of the Donetsk National University.
Congratulating teachers, students and guests of the Donetsk National University with the jubilee VOLODYMYR LOGVYNENKO mentioned that the University had overcome all troubles to its statement and development. And today its honorable place is in the region historical and vital process. It is hard to overestimate its contribution into the development of native education.
The leader of the oblast thanked teachers-veterans, who were the helpers of the university creation, and its graduators, who by means of their names, received knowledge and experience glorified the Donetsk region, and also current students, who are further continuers of the glorious traditions.
During celebrations there were diplomas of honor, gratitudes and decorations given from the Region State Administration and from the Oblast Council.

On the 15th of July 1937 by the decision of the Council of National Commissars there was created the State Pedagogical Institute in Stalino town (Donetsk). The first director of the institute was Yevdokymenko Oleksandr Vasyljovych, who in 1938 was subjected to repressions and was censured for 10 years. In 1941 he died. And only in 1956 the Supreme Court of the Soviet Union posthumously vindicated Yevdokymenko.
There were 2 faculties in the institute. They were the following: historical (71 students) and philological (67 students) and 5 departments. Lessons were in the educational building on the Teatral’nyj avenue (today the building of Trade Institute).
The second director of the institute for a long time (1940-1961) became Ksenofontov Serhiy Oleksijovych (1895-1984). Starting from 1961 the institute was headed by the doctor of historical sciences, the professor Khoroshajlov Mykola Fedorovych (1920-1999).
In 1964 the Donetsk Pedagogical Institute was subordinated to Kharkiv State University and was defined as the Donetsk affiliated branch of the Kharkiv order of the Working Red Flag of the A. M. Gor’kyj State University. The director of the branch - Khoroshajlov Mykola Fedorovych.
On the 28th of May 1965, according to the Decision of Ministers’ Council of the Soviet Union, there was organized Donetsk state university on the basis of the Donetsk affiliated branch of the Kharkiv Gor’kyj State University. The first rector of DonGU was the academician, the doctor of chemical sciences, the professor Lytvynenko Leonid Mykhailovych (1965-1968).
In 1965 postgraduate study was opened, where were only 16 students. This year gave biological, physical faculties and student town. Student science society, which was created in 1951 and counted 200 students, increased to 1000 people in the year of university formation.
The second rector of the university was the doctor of physics-mathematician sciences, the professor Shevljakov Yurij Andrijovych, who headed the university from 1968 till 1970. These years gave 12-stored major building. The third rector of the university (1970-1975) – the doctor of technical sciences, the professor Tymoshenko Hryhorij Markovych
From 1986 the head of the Donetsk national university was the doctor of physics-mathematician sciences, the professor, and academician of Ukraine Shevchenko Volodymyr Pavlovych.
On the 11th of September 2000 the university receives the status of the national by the President's decree of Ukraine.
In 1972 there was established the museum of university history in the main building. The museum exposition has 3 directions: the history of the pedagogical university, the history of the university and the history of faculties. There remain precious materials and historical documents. The exposition is the basis for educational and research work of the students, postgraduate students and teachers.
